Members of the Senate on Thursday disagreed for
a second day over President Goodluck Jonathan’s
request to extend the State of Emergency in three
North Eastern States of Adamawa, Borno and
Yobe.
The Senate had been in a closed door meeting to
deliberate on the president’s request, after
discussions had reached a dead-end on Tuesday.
Senators had been unable to reach an agreement
on the matter as some northern lawmakers,
particularly those from Yobe and Borno states,
were opposed to the extension of emergency rule
in the three north eastern states.
The northern lawmakers were opposed to the
extension of emergency rule on the grounds that
the extension had not helped to curb terrorism in
the region.
This is the second day in a row where the
senators are discussing the extension of
emergency and have reached a dead-end.
The House is expected to re-convene on Thursday
for further deliberations.
