Super Eagles defender, Efe Ambrose, has described the team’s failure to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations as “bad and painful”, but warned that Nigeria cannot afford to miss out on the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“It was quite bad and painful that we are not going to the Nations Cup again,” Celtic defender Ambrose told Complete Sports.

“We have to put that behind us immediately and start looking ahead to the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

“It is a must for us to qualify for the World Cup if we want Nigerians to be happy with us.”

Ambrose has travelled back to his base and is preparing for a Scottish Premiership game against Heats on Saturday.

“I am back and ready to play for my club,” Ambrose continued.

“We have a game on Saturday and I was part of training today and looking forward to the game.
