Six people including a senior local government official have died after a suicide attack claimed by Somalia’s Shebab insurgents at a hotel in the central town of Galkayo, Somalia, on Thursday.

According to the Guardian, witnesses said they heard a large blast near a café where people had gathered to drink tea.

“I heard a heavy explosion and I have seen parts of dead bodies, several bits of them were strewn across the area,” said a local resident named Ahmed Sadaq.

The insurgents responsible for the attack, Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-affiliated Shebab rebels, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement broadcast on the insurgents’ Radio Andalus, stating that they were fighting to overthrow the country’s internationally-backed government.
