President Goodluck Jonathan has reiterated his
commitment to regain control of areas in the
Nigeria’s North-east taken over by insurgents
groups.
Jonathan disclosed this today in Maiduguri, Borno
State, at the launch of the Presidential Initiative
for the North-East (PINE).
The President who was represented by Alhaji
Mohammed Wakil, the Minister of State for
Power, said more troops and resources will be
deployed to the flashpoints with a view to
regaining control of the area.
Jonathan projected beyond the insurgent
challenges saying his government will unveil as
Marshall Plan aimed at rehabilitating,
reconstructing and redeveloping the affected
areas as soon as the insurgents are defeated.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Abdul
Bulama, who attended the PINE launch, lamented
the magnitude of destruction meted out to
residents by the insurgents in the
North-East.
He said “the Federal Government has for long
realised that boots and guns alone cannot solve
the problems in the North-East.
“The underlying factors causing the insurgency to
thrive must ultimately be addressed holistically so
as to stem the possibility of re-occurrence.’’
