President Goodluck Jonathan has commiserated
with his former boss, Chief Diepreye
Alamieyeseigha, on the death of one of his sons,
Oyamuyefa, popularly called Oyoms by his
friends, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Alamieyeseigha was a former governor of
Bayelsa State and Jonathan was his deputy.
In a statement issued yesterday by the
president’s spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati,
Jonathan expressed
sympathy with Alamieyeseigha on the sad loss
of his son.
The statement said: “President Goodluck
Jonathan has received with shock and immense
sadness news of the death of Mr. Oyamuyefa
Alamieyeseigha in Dubai at the weekend.
“On behalf of his family and the federal
government, President Jonathan extends
heartfelt condolences to Oyamuyefa’s father,
Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and his entire
family on the untimely loss of a very dear son in
the prime of his life.
“The President and the First Lady, Mrs. Patience
Jonathan share their pain and grief over the
death of Oyamuyefa in circumstances that are
still unclear.”
Jonathan further assured Alamieyeseigha of
using the instruments of state to support the
investigation that could unravel the
circumstances leading to his son’s death.
As at last night, the details of the death were
still unclear.
While some accounts said Oyoms might have
committed suicide in his father’s house in Dubai,
another account indicated that his body was
found in the elevator of a Dubai hotel, implying
that he might have been murdered.
In a statement last night, the Alamieyeseigha
family confirmed the death of Oyamuyefa, 32, in
Dubai on Saturday.
The statement, which was signed by Prince
Opukiri Jones-Ere, said Oyoms was found dead
outside his apartment in Dubai in the early hours
of Saturday.
Although the statement from the family did not
state the cause of his death, it stated that a
delegation of members of the family and
associates had already left for Dubai.
The family thanked the government and
Nigerians for their sympathies.
Earlier, Alamieyeseigha, in a text message
response to reporters’ enquiries on the incident
had tersely said:
“He was killed in Dubai.”
